Senior Carter Josef at Eagle Valley High School was named the Colorado Student Media Association Dorothy Greer Scholarship winner for 2021. Carter will receive a $3,000 college scholarship as he moves on to his next endeavors.
One judge wrote that “Carter’s stories, both print and broadcast, read with maturity, skill and professionalism. It’s easy when reading Carter’s stories to forget that he is a teenager creating products for a high school media program.” You can view his portfolio here.
His portfolio is being forwarded to the Journalism Education Association Student Journalist of the Year competition, where he will compete with winners from 38 other states for the title of National Student Journalist of the Year. The winner and finalists will be announced at the conclusion of the virtual JEA/NSPA Spring National High School Journalism Convention.
Runner-up in the competition is Amelie Bauer, senior at Arvada West High School. One judge mentioned, “her website portfolio was immediately impressive, containing a wide range of writing samples and sharing some very strong photo work.” You can check out her portfolio here. She will receive a $1500 scholarship.
