IN A TRADITION that has run annually since 2001, with one exception in 2013 due to facility renovation, J-Day returned to the Lory Student Center in Fort Collins on Oct. 8.
Nearly 1,300 descended on a campus undergoing extensive construction, and with lots of parking areas inaccessible or nonexistent, but nothing got in their way of a great day of journalism education and celebration.
Carrie Hendrix, CJE, of Lewis-Palmer, was named Adviser of the Year, and John Biner, principal at Brighton HS, was named Administrator of the Year. Both spoke briefly to the crowd during the opening ceremony. The CSMA board surprised Sheila Jones, CJE, retired from Englewood HS, with a Lifetime Achievement Award for her many years serving the association and now helping new advisers through the JEA Mentor program.
Nearly 50 sessions were available, with Evelyn Lauer, from Niles West HS in Skokie, IL, the featured speaker for the day.
The day ended with singing the First Amendment and the Awards Ceremony. Here are the results:
