First all-electronic Best of Show results

First all-electronic Best of Show results

The J-Day Best of Show contest is a chance to see how your newspaper/newsmagazine, yearbook photojournalism, video broadcast, or website stacks up against the best in the state.

Everything was submitted a few days prior to J-Day, though only schools registered for J-Day could actually enter. Here are the 2012 instructions: Just download these instructions (in Word) and be sure to upload your best work of the 2012-13 school year prior to midnight on Oct. 8.

Best of Show for newsmagazine judging is holistic, so content, writing, design and photo/art all factor in. The thought was that a paper could enter three pages, with one of them page 1. So a paper could enter pages 1 and 8-9 (center spread), or pages 1, 4 and 12, etc.

If a page contains a piece that jumps, the jump page will NOT count as a page, so you could upload a fourth page (clearly labeled) so the judge can read the entire piece.
This change (from past newspaper Best of Show rules) is simply to reduce the insanity of trying to judge several dozen papers in an hour on J-Day itself, which often reduces the whole thing to a beauty contest.
