Competition Comment: The two winners here show two different takes on environmental photography. First is the true set-up shot in the subject's environment, making sure the subject's demeanor (calm, even with the foot wearing the scuffy shoe resting on the other knee) matches a setting that tells the story (sitting on a couch, in a welcoming office that makes sense for a mental health counselor). The other is more candid, but again with attention to setting: someone smiling warmly and working on a flower arrangement with her mother gives good insight as to what type of subject is being covered. Both work, but at all levels of this category, there is room for photographers to exercise a little more creative control over the subject and the setting.
