Competition Comment: For editorial writing, pieces need to hold fast to a couple of hard rules. The first is minor in formatting but major in premise: editorials are unsigned. They should be labeled as written by the staff or editorial board. The second is more important to the heart of the piece: the editorial should be focused on one strong opinion throughout. This opinion, which usually appears in the headline as well, is clear and supported in every paragraph. Quotes are rare, and if they appear, they come from an expert source, not someone who simply is affected by or has an opinion on the subject. Too many 'editorials' border on feature writing. This is a space where staffs give guidance, pass judgement and otherwise try to lead the staff and student body to do better.
