Competition Comment: In all I was surprised by the interview skills, and writing skills of this group of entrants. They have all been taught well how to elicit good answers from their subject, and how to put stories together to make them compelling.
One part I thought was lacking in just about every entrant was supporting video and pictures to go with the subject. In many cases, the video was too wide, not supporting the audio in any way, and just not engaging enough to make one want to stay tuned.
I realize there are different time constraints on many of these students, but these stories could have been made better by taking a little extra time during the taping time that they did have to get better shots. Closer shots. shots of the emotions involved in the content, shots that showed the viewer something they don't normally get to see. And when video isn't easy to get, perhaps getting some file pictures from the subjects would help tell the story better.
Final thought - impressed by the interview and writing skills, as well as the editing of each piece into a cohesive story, mostly what all but one of these stories was lacking was supporting video.
