Students shine in JEA and NSPA competitions

Individual students, varied student media place in competitions during San Diego national convention

The following Colorado student journalists earned recognition during the JEA National Write-offs, with the contests held on April 11, 2014. No more than 10 percent of entries may be awarded a Superior rating.

Yearbook Pacemakers were awarded by the National Scholastic Press Association on April 12, during the San Diego convention. This award is often called the Pulitzer Prize for student media.

In the category of Junior High/Middle School Yearbook, there were three honorees and two of the books are from Colorado. The Prowl, Powell MS, in Littleton earned a Pacemaker. Bella Heisler was editor and Yvette Manculich is the adviser.

The Eagle Eye View, from Sierra MS in Parker, was the state’s other Pacemaker. Gabby Garcia and Kyra Cole were co-editors, and Jed Palmer is the adviser.

 

NSPA holds a Best of Show contest, with various categories in student media, each convention, and a number of Colorado media were honored by placing in the top ten.
